As fans of David know, the character changed drastically from the 1970s to the 1980s. After going back through the Unpaved episodes, I start to notice changes in David by the time Buffy comes along, in 1977. His voice is starting to get that husky quality that we associate with 80s David, and his behavior is starting to seem more erratic. David is also starting to get scaled back as a regular cast member: note his very minor role in the 1978 Xmas special. I could be way off, but maybe this was around the time that he started having problems.

I was shocked to see the "obese David" in the 1989 Gabriella birth episode.

Me too! I remember when I saw the Put Down the Duckie special from 1988, when it reaired in 1994 on PBS, I thought "WOW! What happened to David!!" That's not how I rememeber him!!"
