Okay, as a big lifelong fan of both Sesame Street and a One Life to Live addict since 1992, the Daytime Emmy Awards are to me what the Super Bowl is to sports fans! That time of the year when i can't wait to tune in (or read the reports since it seems there's often something else airing at the same time that i want to tape...usually involving Henson/Muppets!) and armchair quarterback the results. So of course i've been closely following the status of this year's ceremony since signs have been pointing at this possibility of the Daytime Emmys becoming endangered. Even though it honors the best in kids shows, news, and talk shows the big draw and attention has always been of the daytime dramas - and the amount of network soaps airing along with all of their ratings have been on a steady decline. Plus there's been growing controversies over the nomination/judging processes with various rules changes over the years - with the current system still considered far from perfect. All of this means that in addition to thier relavency being more in question, the major networks have not been to eager air them and it's been looking like the 2009 Daytime Emmys might actually end up either completely homeless or aired on a small cable channel like Soapnet.

Here's the latest news that just came out...note an official announcement still is forthcoming but at least there should still be an aired telecast...the article speculates how it may affect the level of attention of the soaps but of course all of us here will be more wondering how much attention Sesame Street will end up getting...

The Daytime Emmys headed to The CW; Tyra Banks to host?

And the winner is the daytime-TV industry?
Yesterday, L.A. Times awards show impresario Tom ONeil exclusively broke news that The CW is thisclose to announcing it will air the 36th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which have been homeless for almost a year.
As previously reported, ABC, SOAPnet, and CBS all turned down the opportunity to air the awards show telecast, which claims to honour the best in daytime programming.*
ONeil learned that the Daytime Emmys will be held in Los Angeles in late summer probably on Aug. 31 at the Orpheum Theatre.
According to the story, ONeil reports, Some details are still sketchy, but the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hopes to have everything ironed out and unveiled by late next week. Nominees will be announced May 14. About a half-dozen top categories, like drama series, talk shows and lead acting, will be unveiled during the fourth hour of the Today show on NBC. Another half-dozen categories, like supporting acting, will be announced during a reception at the Hearst Building in New York that evening, followed by the release of the full list of nominees a few minutes later.
Meanwhile, the buzz around town is that the youth-oriented network plans on asking Daytime Emmy-nominated Tyra Banks to host the kudo-fest. A source close to Banks opines, It makes sense since Americas Next Top Model is The CWs crown jewel. That, and the fact that shell more than likely be nominated again for hosting her daytime talk show [The Tyra Banks Show]. I wouldnt be surprised to see [her pals] Jay Manuel and Miss Jay with their glam sticks on the red carpet. I doubt theyll ask a soap star to host [the Emmys] since The CW doesnt air any. She'll more than likely invite [multiple Emmy winner] Oprah [Winfrey] to join her. Tyra is all about her image now, and hosting the Emmys is at the top of her list of things to [accomplish].
An Emmy-winning soap head writer tells The Suds Report that she's not impressed with the network choice or the Emmy airdate. Everyone knows that the Labour Day weekend is the lowest-watched time of the year. I doubt the ratings will be above a 3.0, to be honest. Gossip Girl basically averages that number, and it's the most-buzzed about show on the net. [Conversely], Y&R attracts five million viewers each day, so [I believe] this is a step down. Last year's Emmy Awards earned a five-something rating on ABC, so do the math. They should air on a major network, not The CW.
The insider continues, [Also] The CW's demos [skews] very young. For them to honour an industry that is watched primarily by an older demo is a little [risky]. Is the CW audience really watching soaps and talk shows during the day? I doubt it.
The source continues to say that the daytime younger demo ratings rank under one million for most soaps, so trying to attract young adults is, in her words, foolish. TV Land, Lifetime, or Bravo would have been a better fit. I bet The CW's thinking is they want to attract soaps older audiences to their network and not the other way around. But I also hear theres a back-up network in case The CW changes its mind, or NATAS wants more money [for its licencing fee] to air the **** thing!
Meanwhile, an Emmy-winning soap actress worries that the Emmycast will feature more talk shows than soaps, since The CWs daytime lineup mainly consists of court programming and chat-fests.
She asks, If [ABC and CBS] rarely aired soap clips during the acting categories, can you imagine what The CW will do. You just know theyll promote the **** out of Gossip Girl, 90210, and the upcoming Melrose Place [update] rather than our shows. This sucks.
Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

...Like i said, at least it looks like they're safe this year, but who knows how this will impact its coverage of Sesame Street (which is ripe for a 40th anniversary tribute)/children shows awards coverage? (And i'll probably be doubly disappointed if the soap coverage is diminished since this is the year OLTL should really be the huge winner since 2008 was the year it flourished under its awesome new headwriter and acting/writing/directing/production value wise really rivaled the best of primetime dramas! It managed to win the Acting and Directing Awards last year - and that was when most of the year was stil under Dena "worst HW ever!" Higley's pen.)

I know what you mean that really sucks what they are saying about this years emmy awards , there sesame street really needs to get the attion that it deseves . I love that show soooooooooooo much , i have been a Y and R fan sense i was 15 missed some eposides now and again , but love it some for the spin off The bold and the beauiful . Bold and the beuiful is a bit better beccause of the fact that Ally Mills from Dr Quinn Medican Woman and The wonder years ( God i miss that show sooooooooo much by the way dvds need to be out of the wonder years )

One other reason that i think all this is happening right now is from some things that i have seen on the net about money right now with the econamy and all the fact that some of soap actors that have been fired also how they say that some soaps may be given the pink slip soon . I am not sure if that is one of the reasons just a thought of mine from shome things that i have read since Januray of this year .

Remember the year that Carol got the Lifetime achivement award, and they stuck it in the ghetto of the "Technical Awards" that isn't televised, and to spice up the ratings, they turned the broadcast into some sort of fake trendy circus? That was when they should have ended. Really... I still think it was despicable that they spent more time talking about what kind of make up is some soap stars' favorite for 5 minutes than some brilliant, warm hearted performer who has been with a show for almost 40 years, as one of the most famous characters in the world.

They pretty much treat the children's shows now with a complete dope slap across the face... and they'd probably do a tribute to the millions of Judge shows that pollute daytime TV before they'd do a tribute to 40 years of a landmark show like Sesame Street... you know, pandering to the lowest common denominator that keep the judges generic and presiding over idiots.

Somehow, anyone remember the episode of Frasier where he's set to host the Seabees, and they waited till the last minute to book the room, so it had to be at 9 in the morning? That's exactly what happened... and considering that they might as well call it the "Emmys for Soaps, Game Shows, Talk Shows, and Judge Shows," and the children's shows/animated programming get the little backhanded compliment of "Technical Emmys" I could care less.

Sesame Will Be Honored!

From: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr...sion/news/e3i964935f0574fe267c0b34200e5c3bd2e

The Daytime Emmy Awards have found a home on the CW.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has inked a deal with the network to broadcast this year's ceremony Aug. 30 from the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

That is two months later than usual for the ceremony and coincides with the CW's fall rollout.

"It is not only a terrifically entertaining show with a core female following similar to our own, but will also give us a promotional platform as we launch our fall 2009 schedule," the CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said.

This marks the first time the Daytime Emmys will air on a non-Big Three network.

NATAS approached the CW after CBS, which had alternated with ABC in carrying the event, declined to renew its contract. After ABC also passed, saying it was not prepared to broadcast the ceremony two years in a row, the Academy and the show's first-time producer, Associated Television International, pitched it to other networks.

ATI, which has an option to return next year, plans to shake up the broadcast, amping up the entertainment quotient.

NATAS president and chief marketing officer Frank Radice said this year's show, executive produced by ATI president David McKenzie and Paul Sharratt, will be "more robust and relevant than ever before."

MGM is handling U.S. distribution for the ceremony, which will honor PBS' "Sesame Street" with a lifetime achievement award for "40 years of educational television."

Which means, it will be even more like a freak show than ever before. Now we get to ask Soap stars what their favorite CW shows are for 5 minutes. All with fake quick cuts that make it look like a music video fot the hipsters! Yaaay!

At the technicals again, no doubt. I'm glad they're getting one, but what they did to Carol was a crime... just so they could have more time talking to starlets.
