I think it may be because fan pages are made out of a genuine love for the subject, and a knowledge of what other fans enjoy.
Often when you do something for financial purposes, (i.e. I'm making the webpage because it's my job... this website exists to bring in more capital) it flavors the site in a negative way, or loses it's purity somehow. I dunno.
