cable contol ?

Can someone suggest a cable that would be suitable to control a puppet eye mech.

Is the cable or usually spring loaded or is the spring usually part of the actually eye mech?

I've found a few spring loaded cables online but they seen crazy expensive, im looking to build 5 or 6 into a puppet which may or may not ever get built so don't want to spend big at this point
