In the light of the massive 50th anniversary celebration of the show a Sesame Workshop spokeswoman Amira Cooney said in a statement:

"Here at Sesame Workshop, our mission is to help kids grow, smarter, stronger, and kinder, and we feel it's impossible to do that without bringing back some o the characters who helped make this show and our organization what it is today. So, we have decided to bring back our most important characters on the show to date - Chicago the Lion and random sheep."

Pfft, as if you've never seen Sesame Street, here are the characters he was referring to...

...but you knew that already.

When asked by a reporter what role they would be playing in the anniversary celebration, Amira simply replied, "All of them! We don't need Cookie Monster or Elmo or Big Bird anymore, Chicago and rando- sheep are the real deal. They deserve to have a whole show to themselves!"

While most fans were ecstatic when the news broke last night, a few were unhappy with the decision. "Look, I loved these guys as kids, and they need to be seen by all, but at what cost? Kids shouldn't be seeing a sheep and a lion being best friends. It's unnatural", said one fan. Another fan said, "C'mon, at least have Abby Cadabby and Oscar appear in the background or something!"
Another fan swiftly started a Change.com petition which has already garnered over 15,000 signatures.

When asked to comment and put these fans' minds at ease, new executive producer Ben Lehmann simply had this to say:
"Suck it up!"
