The Muppets may not have a prime time show anymore, but ABC has not given up on the Muppets. For the 2017-2018 television season, ABC will be airing a brand-new Muppet special once a month. Part of it is to give the Muppets semi-regular exposure, and part is part of a new initiative by ABC to bring back non-holiday television specials.

The Muppet specials of the 2017-2018 season will vary in concepts and even length, ranging from 30 minutes to 60 minutes to even 90-minutes. The first of these specials will air in August, and will be entitled Kermit and Miss Piggy in Thailand, taking place on their trip to Thailand and continuing from where the very last episode of The Muppets left off - and reveal if they get back together.

Additional specials will range from a Pigs in Space special to an Electric Mayhem road trip special to a few variety specials and specials starring such characters as Fozzie, Gonzo, Pepe, and Walter.

Additionally, each episode will be available on Netflix two weeks after its premier, with a DVD, Blu-ray, and digital release three months later (with the exception of any holiday special, which will come to DVD and Blu-ray a year later, though those will be available digitally a day later). At the end of the telvision season, Freeform plans to air a Muppet specials marathon, featuring most of the best specials (and maybe some past specials as well).

I had thought about announcing an "Up Late with Miss Piggy" special, done in the style of The Muppet Show, meaning it'd focus more on the on-stage material than backstage stuff, it'd be shot like TMS or MT, and it'd pretty much start shortly before the talk show begins and end when the talk show does, with no scenes taking place outside the studio (unless it's shown on a video monitor/satellite feed).
