Thanks for the kind words, Marc.
I did design the website (basically thrown together over a couple of weekends). My "day job" is as a graphic designer/production supervisor, which although I am not particularly in love with, has come in very handy in the world of theatre.
I live in...
The Foam Book/Video
Welcome, Marc!
I have found both the Foam book and accompanying videos to be very much worthwhile. (My avatar shows the first fruits of using their techniques) The book is very useful as a guide to have on the table top while constructing, and the videos demonstrate the...
Welcome, Trent!
Welcome, Trent, to the MC family. I'm pretty new here myself but everyone has really made me feel like family.
I'm probably going to buy the Arm's Length video as a treat for myself for the new year. From everything I've heard and read, I'm confident that the material is well...
I know what you mean about experienceing them first-hand. I remember I was in Salt Lake on other business and just happened upon the exhibit. I only had an hour to tour it before I had a meeting to attend, so I was rather disappointed that I didn't get to really savor the experience. I would...
Rugby,
I saw and operated those same alien muppets at the "Art of the Muppets" exhibit in Salt Lake City back in the summer of '86! I'm sure that they would be pretty beat up after that many years of use/abuse by non-puppeteers! I remember the sleeve that you mention, and there was a lady...
I had to go around to a few hardware stores to find it. I think it was an ACE hardware store where I found it, and it was about $20.00 for the can, which was about twice the size of the 77 can.
I like to use the 3M 74 spray adhesive for glueing foam to foam. It is a spray-on contact cement, and the fumes are not too bad, really. It can be a bit tough to control the spray pattern, but with a little practice you begin to get the hang of it. Also it is definitely a "less-is-more"...

Kat- When you say that you're beginning LSOH rehearsals, might we presume that you're puppeteering Audrey II? If so, then you definitely will be getting a workout! The first time I did the show, I did a lot of aerobic exercise to develop stamina, and just a basic regimen of weight work with...
Jennifer-
Here's what I do using the "Foam Book" method. I glued up my foam pieces and mouthplate as usual. But then I skipped a bit to the covering of the foam with the fleece. At the mouth, I simply wrapped the fleece around the edge of the foam and glued it to the inside. After snugging...
Thanks, Beebers- I, too, love the young'uns, but occasionally its nice to commiserate with some one who's been around the block a time or two!
The first time I got the Audrey II gig was when I learned of a production and I basically went in and bulldozed my way in. I told the director that...
Greetings one and all!
I'm new to MC, but certainly not new to puppetry. I got my first puppet, an Oscar the Grouch, for Christmas when I was nine years old. That was thirty-one years ago!
In the intervening years, I've managed to add many diciplines to my performing repertoire, including...
I used a somewhat similar technique to make a "Ghost of Christmas Future" for a production of "A Christmas Carol".
A lot will have to do with the draping characteristics of the fabric. I imagine that your T-shirt is fairly form-fitting, which will actually make your job harder. The cloak of...
Well, I certainly feel a bit like a dinosaur here, because I've literally been in so many plays/musicals that I cannot count them all! And some of them I've done more than one time over the years.
Certainly one of the most interesting roles that I've played is Audrey II (puppeteer) in Little...
I've used 3/16" foamcore mouthplates in puppets with much success. As detailed in the excellent book "The Foam Book" from Grey Seal Puppets, the foamcore is treated in such a manner as to reinforce it to stand up to normal use.
I hadn't thought of using the corrugated plastic, which is ironic...
