That's a good question. I suppose only the actors and puppeteers know the real answer to that question. But I've always suspected that a lot of the stuff we saw back then had some improvising involved, even the muppet sketches. You'll notice back then they usually got them in one continuous...
I almost forgot when the band did "Rockin Robin" in the tree, Animal would keep yelling "TWEET TWEET!!!" towards the end of the song. That was hilarious.
In TMTM, when Kermit is giving his bows at the beginning of the movie.
Kermit: Some of us are graduating with honors.....
Animal: (Chasing student up the aisle) WOMAN, WOMAN, WOMAN!!!!!

I had dozens of Sesame Street records, but I can't recall which ones I had.
I also had the 123 Sesame Street Fisher Price playset(the same one mentioned above) with the same figures. I also had the Sesame Street Fisher Price Clubhouse which I suppose was a complement to the 123 set...
It's a bit late to be posting this, but Alaina Reed (Olivia from Sesame Street) was on ER last night. Very small role, but it was cool to see she's still working.
While I don't think anything can measure up to the original Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight was pretty good. It had some very funny moments. I especially liked the Garth Brooks episode where he kept wanting to do anything but a country song.
