Personally, I never understood the appeal of Steve Carell, anything he does that's live action, his performance is always stiff and wooden, and the way he delivers his lines are so blank and deadpan... yet, whenever he does voice work, he's just the opposite, he seems a lot more energetic and charismatic. But yeah, to me seeing him leave The Office would be like Bewitched without Elizabeth Montgomery, M*A*S*H without Alan Alda, Cheers without Ted Danson, etc.
And actually, Drtooth brought up a point I forgot to mention too, another reason it's wise to work independently is that way, you can control (for the most part) how long you want your own show to survive; otherwise, if you were to do the show FOR the network, then they would either ax it too soon, or milk it for too long.
