Hey everyone, I'm new. I want to make a puppet with blood and a heart to pump it through veins. Is there some sort of pump device any of you know of that I could build to accomplish this?

What's the purpose of the heart and blood? Will you be able to see it? Do you want the puppet to be able to bleed? Will he have an exposed chest cavity?

It's an interesting question. I think if you're looking for something that can be manually pumped, it'd be easier, but something mechanical might be tricky to get pumping in a cycle -- at least, that would be tricky given my technical knowledge.

If manual, I'd say get some plastic tubing for the veins, and maybe a strong balloon or two for the heart, and have a manual pumper (also made of a balloon?) below, that you can manipulate. Pump makes the heart expand, releasing makes it go smaller again.

Perhaps there are some educational functional models of hearts?

What a morbid puppet to make...unless it is for Halloween or something. Never heard of a puppet with a heart and veins before.

The idea is extremely intruiging. I'm very interested to learn what you have in mind for this puppet.

Out of curiosity, do you just need this character to have veins that bulge? That could be accomplished without the blood. Just some tubing that you can pump air through.

purpose

I'm just building it because, quite frankly, I'm a creepy person who is into science and art. I just want to see if I can do it, I'm not purposefully making it for show or anything. I know not being able to see the veins would kind of defeat the purpose of having them, but I'll know they're there. I think the skin would be too thick to worry about making it bleed, but that would be cool anyway.

Well, you could pump it with a foot pedal to keep your hands free.

I think if you sacrifice a chicken under a full moon and scatter the ashes of three wolf puppets into the eternal wind, the bearded God of puppetry will grant your puppet a heart and circulation...

And if it proves itself good enough, it may even become a 'real boy'.
