Evidently the good folks at Nickelodeon Studios (who brought us feature length versions of almost every Nick cartoon as well as the highly underrated Harriet the Spy movie) are making an H.R. Pufnstuf movie, due to be released through Paramount in 2007. Here's a link to IMDB for more details:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0460816/

Some people have speculated that the Pufnstuf movie will be more adult in order to appeal to the generation that grew up with it, as well as to humorously address the supposed drug references in the original show. However, with Nick Studios involvement, I'd seriously doubt they'd make something not 100% for kids, so I doubt the adult angle will happen.

What I would like to see, though, is better puppetry than the original show provided. Obviously it would be a dream come true to see the Henson's involved, but Sid and Marty Krofft (Pufnstuf's creators) probably hold too much of a professional grudge to allow such a creative collaboration to happen.

Maybe they could have someone like Stan Winston and his incredible effects shop take over the characters! He could make the puppets fun and much more believable than the county fair craft show-looking puppets that the Krofft's produced.

Anyway, these are my thoughts. What are yours? I leave you with this link to some Pufnstuf related cartoons that I drew to get your thoughts flowing.

Dang! Sorry. I didn't realize this was already a thread elsewhere.

I don't think it happened. But try telling my mum that it was a huge drug allegory, she wouldn't accept the fact.

This is the very first time I've ever heard about this, so I did a little research and found that indeed the movie has been shelved, some time ago. Too bad :smirk:

Actually, I think it's Sigmund and the Sea Monsters Movie now that will come out 2011. It was reported by Variety a while back.

At least they don't keep saying it will happen, like that Jetsons movie they've been working on since the 90's. Every 2 years I hear "Live actions Jetsons in the works." All I can say is, what works? Where are these works? I keep seeing nothing happening.

Trading down for a less popular one... I don't know how that's gonna work... plus, really... the ideal time to make these movies was before 2000... remember in the late 90's when all the 1970's stuff came back? I mean, the Transformers movie, and the upcoming Smurfs and Fraggle films at least are cashing in off the 80's nostalgia boom...

Will Ferrell has filmed a Land of the Lost movie, which was another Krofft property, and the studios are happy with it enough to green light a Sigmund and the Sea Serpents film. And evidently ol' HR Pufnstuf has been dusted off and will be given the big screen treatment after all. Granted, we'll all believe it once we see it, but in the meantime, it sounds like it might happen. I think it'd be pretty neat to see.

Some how, the inclusion of Will Ferrel sounds like it could be a comedy like "The Brady Bunch" films, basically just making everything in the show a joke. Granted, I'm not that big a Land of the Lost fan, but I don't think the fans would want that kind of treatment of the property.
