It was not Bernice. It was her stunt double/twin sister named Betty. Betty and Bernice were separated at birth. Bernice was the first to break into showbiz and when Betty saw her twin (whom she thought was dead) she decided to audition for GMC. Soon after the movie Betty was flown to New York to act as Bernice's stunt double. That pigeon playing checkers was actually Betty in the wide shots and Bernice in the close ups. It was a dangerous job too. You see Bert is known for flipping over the checker board when he's losing. During one take Bert got mad and flipped the board with Betty on it. She was fine, except she could only turn right when flying.

Today Betty and Bernice rent a small studio apartment together. They are retired and living off of Betty's movie money. PBS just doesn't pay that much. The role of Bernice is now played by Lil' Joe. He's the first male pigeon to play a female role on public television. He is actually the little brother of Bernice and Betty. His stunt double is actually a she named Bitsy. Bitsy is the love child of Gonzo and Betty. Gonzo and Betty got together on the set of GMC and made love on the ledge of the Happiness Hotel.

And that is the story of Bernice the pigeon.
