Does anyone remember the D song? I found
it the other day on the Sesame Street
Lyrics Archive. This was a very weird
song (some apparently have found it
spooky) or rather the animation that
went in it.

It starts basically so:

D! D! D! D!

Daddy dear, oh daddy dear,
Do dogs have dreams, do ducks have ears?
Do dragons dance? Why do gophers dig holes?
Do gophers dress up in their dirty clothes?

D! D! D! D!

You get the flavor, does anyone else have
memories of what pictures were displayed?
Here are the ones I remember: "dandelions
roaring" - dandelions with lion faces",
"daisies have feet/dasies drank the water"
-daisies with cutesy faces, feet, and
eventually in a glass; "dogs dream of meat
and their dreams and their dreams are
delicious" - a dog in bed eating meat (?
I remembered it as being diamonds! Maybe
I confused it with the stars?) in its
sleep; "Little dolly, go to sleep" - an
old-fashioned doll closing its eyes; the
entire animation had a sort of Victorian
flavor. What other images were there?

Despite the weirdness of it all, the song
was quite nice. I remember fantasizing
about it in class once, probably early in
Grade 6 (I had watched a lot of TV during
the summer and while I no longer watched
Sesame regularly, may have seen the
animation again.) Does anyone remember if
there was a big sunflower and/or a harvest
scene in the animation, maybe decorating
a big D at the begining?

I saw that on Sesame Street Unpaved just a few weeks ago. I can't help you with any of your questions, but I will say that it rocks. Thank you.

Yes, I LOVE that song!! One of my favorite classic SS segments!  And yeah, you're thinkin' of the stars in the sky when the dog eats his meaty dream. And yep, there was a big ol' sunflower on the "D" in the beginning.

And the answer to the 1st verse is:

"Dogs have dreams but their dreams are delicious,
Ducks do have ears, but they don't do the dishes.
Gophers dig holes to hide their candy bars,
Dragons don't dance, but they don't smoke cigars."

Then:

"D, D, D, D
Daddy dear, oh daddy sweet
Do dandylions roar, do daisies have feet?
May I have a drink of water and a dish of tadpoles?
Daddy how deep is a doughnut hole?

D, D, D, D
If dandylions roar then your daddy is deaf
The daisies drank the water so the tadpoles left
Your eyes are droopy darling daughter and you're dizzy in the head
The toads are eating dinner so it's time to go to bed

Little dolly go to bed

D"

Other images were:

Ducks with oversized human ears around dishes
Gophers diggin' holes to hide their candy bars
Somethin' about a Chinese dragon (I think)

And other than what you've mentioned, that's all I can remember right now...

That D sketch scared me when I watched #536 of Sesame Street Unpaved, 'cuz of dandylions with lions' heads and huge daisies with human heads and feet!!

When I watched it for the first time when I was a little kid, it was fine, but I don't recall much of it. Now, when I watched that on #536 at the Museum of Television & Radio on Nov. 5 during Veteran's Day, it scared my inside!!!

I had no issues with the segment when I watched the show through 1985, but today I would have issues with the second half of the segment - not regarding the roaring dandelion, but the daisies with human feet (most likely bare feet). I think the segment is more of a surreal but bizarre segment with a lot of crazy questions asked by the girl - and in the second half, the questions the girl asked her "daddy" would become crazier, as if she is getting more tired which explains why she was sent to bed afterwards.

I'd also like to ask, was the "daddy" voiced by Bud Luckey? He does sound familiar - almost like Donnie Budd from the hillbilly number cartoons.
