Looks like a Garfield rip off to me.

You mean you never saw:

Indeed Heathcliff came out years before Garfield and the humor was much different. It was more of the one Panel type strip. And Heathcliff is more comedically energetic than Garfield. Heathcliff was around 5 years before Garfield, and that was when Garfield actually was fat and walked around on all fours. Though I don't subscribe to the either ripping off the other thing.
Also, and yes Heathcliff was named after the guy from Wuthering Heights. I remember my 2003 Heathcliff obsession (I used to get obsessed with things easy back then) spending too much time in search engines sifting through that novel to look for the cat.

As for the strip itself, while it's obvious to bring in Big Bird and Red the Angry Bird, I give major kudos for the inclusion of the oft forgotten Heckle and Jeckle.
