So I had a pretty important accessory broke. Should I use a certain type of glue? I've used hot glue in the past, that's worked pretty ok.

It depends what type of accessory it is.

It's the old style record player from the backstage play set

I'd recommend superglue or gorilla glue on something rigid like that, rather than hot glue.

And use it very sparingly.

Just enough to coat the two broken surfaces very lightly, then hold them together firmly until the glue cures/sets.
