The fact that you are experiencing difficulties, particularly lasting for a couple of days, indicates that you are in fact damaging your voice.
Without seeing/hearing what you're doing it is hard to diagnose what is specifically wrong. Sometimes the way a character voice is produced can be the...
This will probably be welcome news for some folks who hang around here.
A surprising announcement followed the final Broadway performance of Avenue Q. While the Broadway run ended today, the show will reopen off-Broadway October 9, about 5 blocks from the Golden Theatre, its home of the last...
Another thing to consider might be to make puppet building a part of the curriculum. Using something like The Foam Book and/or video, or some of the fine products from Project Puppet the students could first craft their puppets, then learn to manipulate them.
I used to teach puppet voice workshops several years ago... I'll have to do some digging to see if I can find a copy of my lecture notes.
A couple of things that I can recall off the top of my head (late at night and after a rehearsal where I've been playing the part of an actor playing another...
Well, in the "for-what-it's worth department", I did not see an orange shaggy monster puppet on puppet-planet's web catalog, but I did find one on monster puppets.com....
Might this be a case of mistaken identity?
At both Michaels and JoAnn's the boas can be found in the doll-making supplies area. Often the turkey feather boas are most visible, but the maribou ones are there as well. Not sure what Cookie is referring to above, but the ones I got were about six feet long... more than ample for my needs!
Often you can find them at crafts stores such as Michael's or JoAnn's. I like to use maribou boas for hair. They're not expensive, and come in many colors. They're also pretty easy to sew onto puppet scalps.
Sounds like some really nice ideas floating around here. just one thing to remember; if using a puppet does not match and match well with what the director wants, it's going to come off as contrived, no matter how well-conceived the idea is.
It certainly can be frustrating to wait for...
I do it the same way that Buck does, but the only thing I'd add is that it does take some practice to get the feel for it. I took a bunch of scrap foam (is there really such a thing?) and spent about 15-20 minutes just practicing angled cuts. It does get easier the more you do it!
Well, depending on the director's concept of the show, probably any of the characters but JoJo could be a puppet! There is an awful lot of flexibility within the show, presentationally.
A friend of mine was in the original Broadway company, and as I recall the only puppet in that one was the...
I would not say that there is any kind of "industry standard". Like any non-mass-produced puppet, it is going to be based on what is best for that particular puppet and its intended performance circumstances.
I performed in a full-suit puppet some years ago and the feet were just built over a...
Rather than involving pneumatics at all you might consider building something with telescoping body parts. It will still require a bit of engineering, but probably a lot more sure-fire and predictable in performance!
I am currently working on building a prop potted plant that grows from about...
Well this may explain it a little bit... (from Puppets, Inc.'s website)
"We are slowly building up our business to fill the gap in the puppet world left by the sudden disappearance of Puppet Productions. That being said, we want you to understand it will be slow. We will begin by selling...
And again you are proceeding from what you presume to be the case. I work for a manufacturer, and we have no such "online database". On what do you base your statement "professional companies usually have an online database of customers' names, numbers and email information (not necessarily...
Let us not make statements based on the limited information we have. We simply do not have everything that we need to know to say "they should have done this, that or the other."
I have heard (so yes, this is nothing more than hearsay) that they were seized by some authorities. Like...
What you're looking for is polyethylene foam vs. a polyurethane or polystyrene foam. I don't know if I have a "brand" name in my files, but I'll look to see if I can find one.
It is not as rigid as a styrofoam, and not as spongy as poly-foam. It is often used as packing material for...
Really it is much more an issue of conditioning than strength, and there are no short-cuts. The best thing you can di is just puppeteer for as long as you are able, make note of how long you lasted and aim for longer the next time.
I actually went for a couple of years without puppeteering and...
