I remember this. I like how you made all the fingers close using just one line. You could probly even use little hoses/rubber tubing by just cutting out little notches for the bend on the inside of the fingers. Probably wouldn't recommend using masking tape alone though. It starts to break down...

I don't think that first one is carved. The seam down the side would indicate they're flat sheets cut and glued in a way to make the curves. I can't see the video at the moment though, for some reason. Carving does allow you to ease your way into a specific shape and size against reference...

I actually quite like your Kermit. It's recognizable as Kermit, while still looking stylized and would work well for a play. But if you really wanna go for as indenticle as possible, from memory, if you print this one out on A4, it's pretty good.
