NPR's All Things Considered has a segment about the best way to teach children numbers. It begins with a recording of Count von Count counting three apples.

The bottom line of the story: engaging kids in the counting process (for instance, by pointing to things as you count them) is a lot more effective than, say, simply teaching them to recite the numbers 1-10.
Which is to say, Sesame Street has been doing it right for 40 years.
