Nakajima USA Announces Licensing Agreement with Sesame Workshop

Sesame Street Characters Inspire New Fashion Accessories for Tweens and Teens

April 26, 2005 (Los Angeles, Cal.) – Nakajima USA and Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, announced today that they have signed a license agreement to design and market a collection of fashion accessories for tweens and teens. The new collection will launch for Holiday 2005 and will include trend-right pieces featuring favorite Sesame Street characters including Elmo, Cookie Monster, The Count and Oscar the Grouch. Products will retail between $4 and $40, with a portion of proceeds from their sale going to help fund Sesame Workshop’s educational projects for children at home and around the world.

Nakajima USA currently serves as the U.S. master licensee for the specialty channel for Japan’s Sanrio, famous for its “Hello Kitty®” products, and will unite its unique ability to quickly create thousands of fashionable products over multiple categories along with Sesame Street’s 36-year heritage of educating and delighting children of all ages with characters they know and love. “Sesame Workshop is an ideal partner for Nakajima, marrying Sesame Street’s timeless appeal and popular characters that have a strong emotional connection with our tween and teen consumers with our exceptional product development and distribution capabilities,” said Eric Weber, Nakajima’s US President.

The design direction takes characters that are favored by this market, including Elmo, Cookie Monster, and other teen favorites -- The Count and Oscar the Grouch, and blends their unique personalities with fashion trends. “Elmo-topia” is inspired by Elmo’s love of learning and incorporates world cultures in its designs. The Count’s “Toile…ah…ah…ahhh” collection picks up on his gothic-inspired look, with products featuring Victorian colors like purple and black, scalloped edges and filigree. Oscar the Grouch’s inspired “Trashionista” collection takes on punk and grunge elements like zippers, grommets, metal and recycled chic, and Cookie Monster’s “Me  Cookie” assortment includes playful metallics, slouchy shapes and gathered details.
The result includes such unique, expressive items as “Elmo-topia” bohemian hobo bags, a “Toile…ah…ah…ahhh” cell phone case featuring The Count, “Trashionista” camo cuff bracelets courtesy of Oscar, and “Me  Cookie” charm keychains with the lovable Cookie Monster.

Liz Kalodner, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Global Consumer Products for Sesame Workshop added, “The collection we are developing with Nakajima USA allows us to keep teens and tweens engaged in the Sesame Street brand. The characters are nostalgic and the styles are modern and trend-right.”

The multi-category collection will launch in October at the Sanrio stores and other chain and independent specialty stores.

Nakajima USA’s Vice President of Marketing, Ewa Martinoff adds, “We look forward to a strong product launch during the Holiday 2005 season, with a powerful new line-up to follow in 2006.”
