I'm not even sure if I'm spelling it right, but King Marty Moot Mope was more concerned about rhyming than spelling anyway. I was wondering if anyone remembered the ORIGINAL lyrics to the skit with Marty Moot Mope and Same Sound Brown from the early 70's. The reason I specifiy, "original" is because the skit was redone on Captain Kangaroo with live actors.

Here are the lyrics from Captain Kangaroo (I think Sesame Street's lyrics were slightly different).

Once in a kingdom of Boppity Bope,

there lived an old king named Marty Moot Mope.

Marty Moot Mope was the old king's name,

and he loved to hear words that sounded the same.

But, the saddest thing about his rhyming game,

was that he couldn't find a word that would rhyme with his name.

He searched through the country and he searched through the town,

until he finally found Same Sound Brown

"Oh boy, oh joy! I'll bet my crown,

that fellow there is Same Sound Brown.

Same Sound Brown was a rhyming man...

"I can rhyme words faster than I bet you can."

You see if you said moose...

"I would say goose."

If you said moose juice...

"I would say loose goose."

If you said loosey juice moose...

"I would say loosey goose loose."

Now Marty Moot Moot Mope began to feel pretty good,

and he sent for brown just as quick as he could.

And before the king could turn around,

there in the court was Same Sound Brown.

He bent one knee and bowed to the king,

and said, "Morty Moot Mope, I can rhyme anything.

"Well," said the king, "I'm glad you came,

now make me a rhyme to rhyme my name."

"I'm sorry king, but there's very little hope,

I've rhymed some hard ones in my time, but Marty Moot Mope...is...hard to rhyme..."

"Well, if you can't find a rhyme, here's what I'll do,

I'll put you in a cage in the royal zoo!"

"You'll have to catch me first," said Same Sound Brown,

and before you're off your thrown, I'll be half way out of town.

"And I'll tell you something else, Marty Moot Mope,

you couldn't catch me with a 40 foot rope."

"Forty foot rope?" cried Marty Moot Mope,

"Forty foot rope rhymes with Marty Moot Mope!"

"Of course it does, I knew it all the time;

there are very few words that I cannot rhyme."

"See here, young man, I'll make you a knight!"

"Oh no thank you, sire, that's allright."

"Since you were going to cage me when you thought I couldn't rhyme;

I'm going back and do my rhyming in my own good time."

The moral of this story is: Never threaten to put someone in the royal zoo,

because the person who winds up in the cage just might be you.

Captain Kangaroo even did a sequal to the live action skit, which I don't beleive was ever on Sesame Street. I haven't seen the sequal in years and I don't know the lyrics to that one.

Anyway that's Captain Kangaroo's version; can anyone recall how the words to the Sesame Street version went?

Yeah, it was a different kind of classroom skit, since Roosevelt and his class were basically just a lead in to the story. I wasn't able to find much online about that particular skit or even on these forums. I was hoping someone knew how the lyrics to the skit went on Sesame Street, because I don't think it was the same as the Captain's. Close, but not identical.

We could realy use some help here!

We have a few fellow members out here who would realy like to obtain the original words and, if possible, the actual video clip of this Roosevelt Franklin skit. I, personally, do not recall ever seeing this, so any help from some of the more seasoned pros out there would realy be appreciated! Lets see what we can dig up here. We need the original words, any possible video footage and where we can get it, and, if all else fails, at least the episode #(s) from the SS episode(s) it was aired on.

Lyrics to Marty Moot Mope

Hello, this is my first post. My original interest was in finding the words to Marty Moot Mope. My daughter and I watched the program in the 1970s and really liked the poem.

What is posted here is almost the way I remember it, however there are a few differences. I may be wrong, but here goes, here is my best remembered version for three of the verses:

"He bent one knee and said to the king,
"Majesty, dig it, I can rhyme anything."

Next, on the website, I found there is a line which appears to be missing. I don't remember the precise version, but it probably went something like:

"I'm sorry king, but there's very little hope,
Insert here: "But there's nothing which rhymes with Marty Moot Mope."

Thirdly: "Well, if you can't find a rhyme, here's what I'll do,
I'll throw you in jail and spank you too.

Finally, I thought the king's first name may have been Morty and not Marty.

Any feedback on this?
